According to CERT (www.cert.org), there were 82,094 security incidents in 2002. Only four months into 2003, there have already been 42,586 incidents reported this year. An incident may involve hundreds or even thousands of sites and can last for days or even weeks.
These incidents come from the more than 10,000 vulnerabilities discovered in computer software (including web server software) since 1995. There were 4,129 new vulnderabilities discovered in 2002 alone. As the Internet continues to grow, these numbers will also grow.
